Sony rumors has surfaced that three new wide-angle lenses will soon be available for its APS-C mirrorless camera line up. The last time that Sony released a crop-sensor lens was three years ago.

According to Sony Rumors, wide-angle lenses are the focus of the company. The upcoming lens line-up includes the Sony 11mm f/1.8 E ultra-wide and a Sony 15mm f/1.4 G ultrawide lens.

Both lenses are expected to fill in the needed ultra-wide angle focal lengths for its APS-C Alpha cameras.

But besides the two prime lenses, Sony will also launch a new Sony 10-20mm f/4 E lens. The concern now is, the company already has the Sony 10-18mm f/4 E OSS lens. If the rumors are true, then both lenses are somehow redundant and will compete with each other.

Moreover, the Sony 11mm f/1.8 E, if true, would be a game-changer as there is no first-party APS-C lens available at that focal length.

There is an available Sony 16mm f/2.8 E lens at the moment. But this lens is not well-received due to sub-par image quality. Hopefully, the new Sony 15mm f/1.4 G would be fill in for it.

The lens prices remain unknown at the moment.

Sigma set to release an ultrawide contender too

It seems like Sigma is poised to release another E-mount lens.

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the company will announce the Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN E-mount lens on June 1.

The lens specs include:

  • Lens configuration: 16 elements in 11 groups
  • Shortest shooting distance: 25cm
  • Maximum shooting magnification: 1: 5.6
  • Number of aperture blades: 9 (circular aperture)
  • Filter diameter: 72mm
  • Size : Φ77.2 x 100.6mm (E mount version is 102.6mm)
  • Weight: 450g
  • Mount: L mount ・ Sony E mount

With these specs in mind, will it compete with the rumored Sony lenses?

Not exactly as the new Sigma lens will be available for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras.

Surely, the full-frame Sony lenses are compatible with Sony APS-C E-mount cameras. However, it is a waste of money as you will be paying a huge sum for a lens that you might not need.

Besides, full-frame Sony lenses are more expensive due to its features such as wider aperture and better build quality.

That being said, it seems like 2022 is the year of ultra-wide lenses for Sony.
